Other Voices: State should require licensing of carpenters.(Brief Article)

After several false starts, bills requiring that all carpenters working in Michigan be licensed have reached the committee level in both the House and Senate in Lansing. Licensing requirements protect consumers by ensuring that all workers in carpentry have passed a rigorous qualification exam and by providing a disciplinary mechanism (suspension or forfeiture of the license) in the event of substandard work.

Currently, carpenters are not required to be licensed under Michigan law, making it one of just a few trades without such a requirement. The Michigan Regional Council of Carpenters has been lobbying to correct this serious gap in consumer protection.
