The proposed merger between National Steel Corp. and U.S. Steel L.L.C. likely would be a boon for the Great Lakes Steel division in Ecorse and River Rouge, union and industry analysts say. Mishawaka, Ind.-based National Steel, which owns the 47 million-square-foot complex, said last week it's negotiating to be acquired by Pittsburgh-based U.S.
Steel (NYSE: X). Great Lakes, which employs about 3,800 in its steelmaking and finishing operations, would not only survive, but also thrive if the two giants merged, said Harry Lester, director of United Steel Workers of America District 2. Much of U.S. Steel's automotive orders likely would shift to Great Lakes for two reasons: its proximity to Detroit's auto manufacturing and its modern equipment, Lester said....
