The Detroit Medical Center parlayed operating improvements at most of its eight hospitals and better debt collection into a near break-even year in 2001. The DMC, the state's third-largest hospital company, reported an operating loss of $5.9 million last year on revenue of $1.63 billion, compared with an operating loss of $33.9 million in 2000 on revenue of $1.58 billion.

The 2001 performance does not include a one-time, $66.2 million charge taken for losses stemming from care provided to patients of OmniCare Health Plan in Detroit and The Wellness Plan in Detroit.
