Delphi steers vendors toward Toyota system.(Delphi Corp., Toyota Motor Corp.)(Brief Article)

Delphi Corp. plans to convert its worldwide suppliers to manufacturing procedures modeled after those of Toyota Motor Corp. The industry's biggest parts supplier, which buys about $14 billion annually in outside content, is taking the step after getting positive results from its efforts with Toyota's system.

Delphi has hired former Honda Motor Co. purchasing chief Dave Nelson as vice president of global purchasing to head the effort. The former General Motors Corp. division adopted the so-called Toyota Production System at some of its North American plants in 1996.
