Tighter immigration policies worry WSU, Lawrence Tech.(Wayne State University, Lawrence Technological University)(Brief Article)

Universities in Southeast Michigan stand to lose millions of dollars when two federal policy changes for tracking international students take effect. The most worrisome of the changes is the announcement in May from the U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Service that part-time international students no longer would be allowed into the United States on visitor visas as of July 1.

This could cost schools with large part-time Canadian populations, such as Wayne State University and Lawrence Technological University, millions in revenue. Canadians comprise about 10 percent of Lawrence Tech's 4,200 students - amounting to $2.5 million in lost revenue next year if the rule isn't relaxed, said Maria Vaz, associate provost of the Southfield school.
