Northwest sees friendlier skies; Detroit called key to strategy.(News)(Northwest Airlines Corp.)

Byline: Michael Strong Northwest Airlines Corp. thinks it will survive the tough operating environment that forced United Airlines parent UAL Corp. to file for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, and its Detroit hub is critical to that survival. ``We believe we're in a great position to succeed,'' Jim Greenwald, Northwest vice president-facilities and airport affairs, said last month during the opening of the Westin Hotel in the midfield terminal at Detroit Metropolitan Airport.
