Kroger says it fired first shot in grocery-store price war.(News)

Byline: Brent Snavely As soon as Farmer Jack reopened its stores June 20 with lower prices on thousands of items, speculation began about how and when Kroger Co. and Meijer Inc. would hit back. But Cincinnati-based Kroger says it actually threw the first punch. "Farmer Jack is reacting to us,'' said Leonard Terranova, senior manager of public relations for Kroger's Great Lakes region, which includes Michigan and Ohio.

"We broke (the program) on June 1.'' Marty Kozar, Farmer Jack's vice president of strategic marketing, declined to comment. But Neil Stern, a partner with the Chicago-based retail consulting firm McMillanDoolittle L.L.P., said Farmer Jack's "We're thinking fresh'' campaign is an elaborate price, freshness and customer-service program...
