Byline: Laura Bailey Joan Mahoney, dean of the Wayne State University Law School, is the third dean at WSU to leave this summer. Mahoney, who became dean in 1998, turned down a one-year contract extension after the university declined to offer her another five-year appointment, the typical term of an administrative contract at WSU.

Nancy Barrett, provost and senior vice president for academic affairs, would not elaborate on the reasons Mahoney was not offered a longer contract. Barrett said an interim law-school dean will be named in the next couple of weeks, followed by a national search for a permanent replacement.
