Rewrite of telecom law draws attention.(Special Report)

Byline: Amy Lane The next rewrite of Michigan's main telecommunications law is starting to move onto some Capitol radar screens. Senate Majority Leader Ken Sikkema, R-Wyoming, plans this year to appoint a task force, Michigan Public Service Commission staff are looking at the issue and local-phone competitors of SBC Communications Inc.

and Verizon Communications Inc. are starting to draw up priorities. The early rumblings come with nearly two years left for the 2000 law regulating telecommunications providers. The law expires at the end of 2005, but officials say it's not too soon to start looking at what traditionally is a complex and heavily lobbied topic.
