Amazon's jewelry foray could press local jewelers.(Amazon.com Inc.)

Amazon.com announced Thursday that it was adding an online jewelry store after a beta test of the site drew more than 100,000 buying customers. Its selling point: a promise to sell high-quality jewelry for around a 15 percent markup, compared with what it says is the industry standard markup of 60 percent to 100 percent.
"I regard online jewelry sales as another part of the competition that we have to really deal with,'' said Steve Tapper, vice president and co-owner of Tapper's Diamonds and Fine Jewelry in West Bloomfield Township.
