Thomas offers plan for new Detroit school board MACKINAC ISLAND - A new proposal for Detroit school governance may come up in the Legislature, as soon as next week. Sen. Buzz Thomas, D-Detroit, said Friday he hopes in the next two weeks to offer his proposal, which would replace the existing referendum before voters in November.
As Crain's recently reported, Thomas' measure would give city voters the option of restoring an elected board to oversee Detroit schools. The nine board members would be elected by districts within the city, and a CEO nominated by the mayor but subject to approval by the board would carry out the day-to-day management of the district.
