Small foundation tries to have big effect on health.(Special Report)(Metro Health Foundation)

Byline: Sherri Begin The Metro Health Foundation has had big impact for a small foundation. The Detroit-based organization, which began in 1986 as a spinoff of the Black-Polish Conference convened by U.S. Rep. John Conyers, last month awarded its 500th grant to support access to health care.

That brings its total grants over the past 18 years to $6.1 million. That amount, and its $7.5 million in assets built up from investment of operating excesses, are noteworthy given that Metro Health began with an endowment of just $5.6 million.
