Byline: Sherri Begin You may be surprised at some of the organizations that have earned nonprofit status. Many look, operate and compensate their executives like for-profit companies. NSF International Inc. and Altarum Institute, both of which were formerly housed in the University of Michigan, compete head-to-head with for-profit testing labs and defense consulting organizations, respectively, for not only business but also top talent.
In 2003, Ann Arbor-based NSF paid its former CEO Dennis Mangino $753,531 to oversee the organization's budget of more than $70 million and sites in more than 90 countries.
