1. Somanetics Corp.: Oxygen device starts to take off Tucked near an I-75 bypass in Troy, Somanetics Corp. is quietly becoming one of Southeast Michigan's more successful publicly traded companies. Somanetics makes a device called a cerebral oximeter, a machine that monitors brain oxygen levels during surgery so doctors can quickly respond to prevent strokes and other complications.

And you don't have to be a brain surgeon to see it's a product that's paying off for the company. Somanetics (Nasdaq: SMTS) reported second-quarter and midyear results June 14.
