Survey: State small-biz owners not as optimistic as elsewhere Michigan's small-business owners have a bleaker outlook than their counterparts in other Midwest states, according to a poll conducted for the Cleveland-based National City Bank. Overall, 71 percent of small-business owners in Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Missouri, Ohio and Pennsylvania are optimistic about economic conditions, according to the National City Small Business Confidence Index for August.
Michigan owners ranked at 68.3, the state's worst showing since April, when auto sales were in steep decline. There is, however, a major caveat: The survey was taken before Hurricane Katrina. Even before Gulf of Mexico oil was temporarily blown out of the market, owners voiced concern...
