But the latest version of Michigan telecommunications law, passed by the state House last Thursday, moves the state closer to what it will ultimately get. House Bill 5237 has the support of SBC Communications Inc. and the neutrality of a coalition of consumers and SBC competitors, while others oppose the bill and say it falls short of promoting competition.

Now, lawmakers will sort out whether HB 5237, a more sweeping Senate-passed measure, or an amalgam of the two becomes the state's next telecom law. (See box, Page ...
