Byline: Terry Kosdrosky Dana Johnson, senior vice president and chief economist at Comerica Bank, said index numbers show a stagnant but not free-falling economy in metro Detroit. Johnson compiles the Detroit Area Business Activity Index and the average this year though October is down 2.25 percent from last year.
Johnson also compiles the Michigan Business Activity Index and the Michigan Tourism Activity Index. So what are the indices telling us? They're telling us the regional and state economy are flat and stagnant and trailing the national economy. The Detroit Area Business Activity Index was launched nearly 50 years ago, encompassing seven full swings of the U.S. business cycle.
