Byline: Scott Cendrowski Wayne Avis said skiing in Michigan is usually an afterthought for him if he's looking for a challenge on the slopes. The president of Southfield-based Asset Property Management Inc. and 20-year season pass-holder at Nub's Nob in Harbor Springs would rather go to Utah to find steep, tough terrain for skiing.

But skiing in Michigan, he said, is more about preparing for the big mountains and being around friends. Still, some northern Michigan runs are as steep and fearsome as their real-mountain counterparts, eliciting the blood-pumping adrenaline rush that serious skiers live for. They just aren't as long.
