Region's unemployment down, but the labor force is smaller.(reports)

Byline: Amy Lane Southeast Michigan's unemployment rates slid in 2006's first quarter, but it's not the good news you might think. In nearly every county and for the region as a whole, unemployment rates dropped from a year ago as the labor force shrunk. The reasons could be many: Some people may have returned to family obligations or school, while others simply may have given up actively seeking employment in a region that has been hit hard by manufacturing-related employment volatility and job loss, said Jim Rhein, labor market analyst with the Michigan Department of Labor and Economic Growth.
