Byline: Amy Lane A bill that retains overtime exemptions for employers when the state minimum wage rises on Oct. 1 is on its way to Gov. Jennifer Granholm, after clearing the Legislature on Wednesday. The state Senate and House gave immediate effect to House Bill 6213, sponsored by Bill Huizenga, R-Zeeland.
The bill preserves the vast majority of exemptions employers had worried they'd lose, said Ari Adler, press secretary to Senate Majority Leader Ken Sikkema, R-Wyoming. Until now, federal overtime rules have prevailed because Michigan's minimum wage was below the federal minimum wage. But with Michigan's minimum wage now set to rise to $6.95 an hour on Oct., 1, surpassing the $5.15 federal rate, the federal minimum wage law will no longer apply. As a...
