Michigan Tech works to cultivate SE Michigan ties.(Michigan Technological University)

Byline: Sherri Begin Michigan Technological University hopes its new Ann Arbor institute and Nov. 2 Youth Engineering and Science Expo in Detroit will help boost interest in related careers and its sagging enrollment from the region. The Houghton-based university earlier this month agreed to buy for $1.4 million Altarum Institute's Environmental and Emerging Technologies Division in Ann Arbor, which employs 24 and posts $4 million in annual gross research revenue.
The new division's strengths in environmental applications, and sensors and signal processing covering everything from satellite imagery to brain waves fits well with some of the university's research programs, said David Reed, interim provost and vice president for research at Michigan Tech....
