Delphi's plan: Rehire some retired workers Talk about unintended consequences. Now that Delphi Corp. has eliminated tens of thousands of hourly jobs, the company wants to bring back some retired skilled-trades workers as contractors to alleviate labor shortages. Last month, the UAW agreed to let two Delphi plants scheduled for closing - Milwaukee and Flint East - return hourly retirees to work through an outside staffing company, according to a memorandum of understanding signed by the union and Delphi.

The agreement covers only skilled trades such as machine repair, tool-and-die makers, millwrights and carpenters. But it is unprecedented for the UAW to allow hourly retirees to return as nonunion contractors to perform jobs once filled by unionized...
