In the century since the first auto show put on by the Detroit Automobile Dealers Association, the show has gone from a display of a few automobiles to an international event that lures more than 6,000 members of media to Detroit The auto show's long and colorful history mirrors many events and trends in American culture.

The show has been suspended only a few times, including from 1943 to 1952 because of World War II and the Korean War.
