Improved handset technology and a greater reliance on cell phones and other wireless devices mean companies can tailor their message to consumers they know are more likely to be receptive.
Users have to opt into whatever is aimed at them, such as by sending a text message that triggers a retailer's message, or by selecting a vendor from search results.
