Speaking of health care, Republicans in the state Senate have proposed ways that could greatly reduce the cost of health care for government employers and school districts. But because the measures affect a health care arm of the largest teacher's union in the state, the Michigan Education Association, they may not get the political traction they deserve.

Supporting the reform package is a great way for Democrats to convince their colleagues across the aisle - as well as business groups - that they are open to cost-saving reforms. The bills would encourage government and school districts to either self-insure or pool for medical, dental or optical benefits as well as an optional pool for catastrophic coverage.
