DTE Energy to spend $330M to automate meter reading.(News)

Byline: Amy Lane DTE Energy Co. is launching a six-year, nearly $330 million effort to automate its system for reading its customers' 4 million electricity and gas meters. On the electric side, the advanced system entails new meters that would communicate directly with utility Detroit Edison Co., eliminating estimated bills, providing customers with real-time price information to better monitor and control their daily electricity use, and notifying the company when customers lose power, said DTE Chairman and CEO Anthony Earley Jr.

On the natural-gas side, new equipment attached to existing meters will allow Michigan Consolidated Gas Co. to read meters remotely. The initiative is among the Detroit-based energy company's plans for 2007 - a year Earley...
