ISO now offering voluntary standards. (International Standards Organization)

A new market-oriented, voluntary approach to environmental cleanup has arrived from Switzerland with hopes it will replace the current system of government laws and regulatory mandates. Known as ISO 14000, it is a series of recently published environmental standards issued by the Geneva, Switzerland-based International Standards Organization.

ISO is known for promulgating ISO 9000, the 1987 standards and certification governing quality business processes. As of the end of 1995, about 8,500 U.S. companies had earned ISO 9000 certification (BI, Jan. 29). The core of ISO 14000 is section 14001, which sets the standard for environmental management systems.
