Digital verdict is lone loss for keyboard makers facing repetitive motion suits. (Digital Equipment Corp.)

NEW YORK - The $5.3 million verdict this month against Digital Equipment Corp. in a keyboard injury lawsuit represents the exception to the rule, legal experts say. In fact, the industry late last week scored another victory when International Business Machines Corp. won a similar case in a New York state court.

But plaintiffs' lawyers are optimistic that the verdict in the Digital case signals the tide will turn in their favor. "The era of (computer keyboard maker) invincibility is over," declared Moshe Maimon, a partner with New York-based Levy, Phillips & Konigsberg who represented the plaintiff in the IBM case.
