OMAHA, Neb.-If Berkshire Hathaway Inc. shareholders had somehow overlooked that the company was a significant force in the insurance business, that message was brought home at its annual meeting last week. The 1998 acquisition of General Re Corp. and its impact on everything from the size of Berkshire's annual meeting and shareholder base to its contribution to the company's float were among the key points of discussion at the annual meeting.
More than 15,000 people attended the May 3 annual meeting, exceeding the Ak- Sar-Ben Coliseum's capacity of roughly 12,000 people. An additional venue was set up to accommodate the overflow.
