Judge denies request for Jaffray appeal.(Brief Article)(Statistical Data Included)

LONDON--Lloyd's of London names who had hoped to appeal the verdict in the Jaffray vs. Lloyd's fraud case have been dealt a blow by the judge in the case. At a Dec. 21 hearing, Mr. Justice Cresswell, the presiding judge, denied the 216 names permission to appeal. He gave the names 21 working days to seek a reversal of that decision in the appeal courts.
Mr. Justice Cresswell reiterated his desire to see an end to a decade of asbestosis-related litigation against Lloyd's. Last October, he ruled that senior figures at Lloyd's in the 1980s were innocent of making fraudulent representations to the plaintiffs regarding the extent of imminent asbestosis losses (BI, Nov. 6, 2000).
