Always satisfying customer needs and getting the job done right the first time are the hallmarks of Weyerhaeuser Co.'s insurance department. To function so effectively, the department applies so-called ``total quality management'' principles, including the formation of teams to tackle many missions.

Proof that its system works came when Weyerhaeuser recently replaced some departments with outside contract services and ordered others to cut their staff size. The 12-member insurance department, however, survived intact.
