PARIS-French insurers met with government officials last Tuesday to discuss problems resulting from their exposure to claims from the Sept. 11 U.S. terrorist attacks and the possibility of government assistance. A spokeswoman for the Federation Francaise des Societes d'Assurances, the Paris-based association of French insurers, said the outcome of the meeting, headed by French Finance Minister Laurent Fabius, would be known in about six weeks.
The talks centered on the effects that claims from the attacks will have on insurers' financial stability and on possible measures to help alleviate the financial burden. One possibility insurers would like considered is using a French government fund for victims of terrorist attacks set up in 1986 to help pay...
