PHILADELPHIA-Employers must exercise caution when investigating employees for potential wrongdoing, because missteps could expose them to liability, an employment attorney warns. If an investigation were to be carried out incorrectly or if it were to venture into an employee's private life, it could lead to a lawsuit that not only could overturn any punishment handed out to the employee but also could result in a large damage award against the employer, said Robert Gregg, an attorney with Boardman, Suhr, Curry & Field L.L.P.
