UnumProvident hit for claims practices UnumProvident Corp. must pay $7.67 million to an individual after a jury found that the insurer used biased medical examiners and withheld disability benefits information to avoid paying her long-term disability claim. After the verdict, U.S. magistrate James Larson issued an injunction ordering the company to cease the claims-handling practices, which are considered unfair business practices under California law.
UnumProvident ``strongly disagrees'' with the court's ruling and plans to appeal, a spokeswoman said.
