Byline: MEG FLETCHER TALLMANSVILLE, W. Va.-The owner of the West Virginia coal mine where twelve miners were killed last week is insured for its primary workers compensation exposure with a private insurer that assumed the business of the state's exclusive comp fund just a day before the accident.
On Jan. 1, Charleston, W.Va-based BrickStreet Mutual Insurance Co. took over International Coal Group Inc. and other employer clients of West Virginia's former exclusive state fund as part of a privatization effort. The state plans to have a multi-insurer marketplace for workers comp coverage by July 1, 2008.
