Non-publishing units put sizzle in Playboy. (Playboy Enterprises Inc.)

Entertainment ventures help fuel best year since '91 Playboy Enterprises Inc. is named for its flagship men's magazine - which continues to generate 38% of total revenues - but catalogs, cable television entertainment and international initiatives are driving growth at the Chicago-based company.
"We're really starting to see the payoff from our strategies in those areas," Chairman and CEO Christie Hefner said after the company's recent annual meeting, pointing to strong performances in five consecutive quarters. "We feel those dynamics will continue to drive the company through 1997." At the meeting in Beverly Hills, Calif., Ms. Hefner noted that Playboy had revenues of $276.6 million in the year ended June 30 - a 12% jump from the previous year. Net income was...
