Heresy studied amid electronic trading boom Even as it prepares to ring the gong for a new 60,000-square-foot trading floor, the Chicago Board of Trade is rethinking its commitment to open-outcry sessions at night. Assumptions about the exchange's future have shifted dramatically in recent weeks as a booming after-hours experiment in computer-based futures trading eclipsed a six-year decline in the exchange's face-to-face evening sessions.

Though driven by economics, the shift to less-costly electronic trading would be controversial, considering that open outcry has long been considered the lifeblood of the exchange.
