Tough rivals rev up motors just as Racing Champions readies first public offering Racing Champions Corp. is all revved up to go public, but the track is getting trickier for the Glen Ellyn-based marketer of scale-model racing cars. Two big names in the toy industry are coming soon to the shelves where Racing Champions is a leading seller: Hasbro Inc.
and Mattel Inc. "My sense is that two two-ton gorillas are coming down the pike," says Jane Gilday, an analyst at Advest Inc., a Boston-based stock broker. Lately, stock-car racing's popularity has been zooming, and Racing Champions has kept pace: Sales more than doubled in the last three years, to $66 million.
