Electronics distributor slashes costs Bruce Johnson has wasted no time making his mark on Richardson Electronics Ltd., the long-struggling LaFox-based distributor that has enjoyed brightening prospects in recent months. The 56-year-old Mr. Johnson, former president of Premier Industrial Corp.

in Cleveland, joined Richardson as president and chief operating officer 11 months ago and was accorded wide-ranging responsibilities by CEO and Chairman Edward Richardson, 55. He has been shaking up the company ever since. At Mr. Johnson's insistence, Richardson dismissed about 8% of its 300-member headquarters workforce, wrote off bad debts and slashed costs. The company's travel agency was replaced, as even senior managers began staying at Holiday Inns instead of Hiltons...
