Route 53 branch will create more suburban sprawl A proposed toll road extension in Lake County could prove a public policy nightmare rather than a powerful jobs engine, according to new data compiled by the area's planning commission. In fact, the Route 53 extension would lead to an influx of new residents roughly equal to the population of Waukegan in northwestern and central areas of the county that already are straining under unbridled housing growth.

Opening the controversial new toll road would draw an additional 60,473 residents to Lake County by 2020, primarily along Route 53's north-south corridor. But the county would gain only 4,461 jobs, and those would be concentrated in southeast Lake, between the county's already booming Tri-State Tollway and Route...
