Chicago, NYC part of major expansion push Hyatt Hotels Corp. is a four-star maverick, shunning the recent wave of industry consolidations and public offerings roiling the lodging industry to remain privately held. But Chicago-based Hyatt is matching its peers in one area: The $3.1-billion upscale hotel operator is pushing the most ambitious expansion strategy in its recent history.
In 1998, Hyatt is doing more new construction deals than in the previous 10 years combined, with projects ranging from a traditional airport-based business hotel at Pittsburgh International Airport to a resort in St. Kitts in the Caribbean.
