UAL taps airline parts biz. (United Airlines entry into the aircraft spare parts industry)

Joint venture will service carriers, compete with AAR United Airlines wants a piece of the $10-billion market for aircraft spare parts, and it's starting a new, locally based company to get it. UAL Corp., United's Elk Grove Township-based parent, is investing in a joint venture with Air Canada and the maintenance arm of Lufthansa German Airlines to broker parts for their own aircraft fleets and the planes of other carriers.

United will give the venture a big head start by turning over its inventory of used parts, valued at an estimated $700 million. "Unless I screw it up, this is bound to be successful," says David J.
