As election heats up, so do donations to Braun's rival WASHINGTON - After months of sitting on the fence, Chicago companies are adding to Sen. Carol Moseley-Braun's problems by putting decisive amounts of cash behind her opponent. In July, GOP Senate candidate Peter Fitzgerald raised twice as much in political action committee (PAC) contributions as the Democratic incumbent, according to a computer tally of monthly PAC reports filed with the Federal Election Commission (FEC).
Perhaps even more telling is the home-state margin: Illinois companies - including Amoco Corp., Ameritech Inc., Deere & Co, Kraft Foods Inc. and Sundstrand Corp. - accounted for $18,000 of the $53,500 Mr. Fitzgerald raised from PACs in July, while no Illinois PACs were among the $26,500 in...
