Accounting firms and financial services giants have been acquiring consulting and professional services firms as they expand their offerings. But American Bar Assn. guidelines bar law firms from merging with accounting concerns. Now, a small Chicago law firm is experimenting with cross-pollination by affiliating with one of the Big Five accounting giants.
Horwood Marcus & Berk, a 25-lawyer firm specializing in tax law, is forming an alliance with New York-based KPMG LLP -- a move that will allow the two firms to tap into each other's client bases and resources.
