Thousands of current and former Waste Management Inc. stockholders will share in a $220-million settlement that resolves class-action lawsuits dating back two years that alleged that the company inflated earnings. Disgruntled investors filed more than a dozen civil lawsuits after Waste Management's stock price plunged in October 1997 when the company lowered earnings amid concerns about questionable accounting practices.
The complaints alleged that the company boosted profits to keep stock prices high. Similar lawsuits were filed against Waste Management this summer after the company disclosed a $150-million revenue shortfall and its stock price subsequently fell more than 50%.
