Despite the dot.com meltdown, some small businesses are profiting from e-commerce. By providing fulfillment services for Internet marketers, they are reaping better wholesale prices on supplies, more resources for customer service and sometimes year-round revenue in traditionally seasonal businesses.

One small company that believes in the concept is Designs by Carol. The Niles-based florist supplies and delivers flower arrangements locally for national e-commerce firm 1-800-flow-ers.com Inc. of Westbury, N.Y. When an Internet shopper places an order on the company's Web site for delivery to the North Shore or northwest suburbs, Designs by Carol fills it.
