MEIJER POSTPONES SUBURBAN EXPANSION Meijer Inc. has canceled plans to build a store in West Dundee and postponed the construction of stores planned for Bloomingdale and Plainfield, according to municipal and real estate sources. But a spokesman for the superstore chain insists that the company still intends to open 20 stores in the Chicago area, although he won't provide a time frame.

``We redefined our list of possible sites, and West Dundee did not fit into that,'' says a Meijer spokesman. ``We're not slowing down.'' But the company is undergoing some belt-tightening, brought on by sluggish sales as consumers pull back. Last month, the company said it will only open five stores next year-half as many as in the previous two years-and that it will cut labor...
