PepsiCo closes Quaker purchase.(Quaker Oats Co.)(Brief Article)

Crain's Chicago Business, August, 2001

Soft drink maker PepsiCo Inc. completed its $13.9-billion acquisition of Chicago-based consumer products company Quaker Oats Co. Earlier in the week, a deadlocked Federal Trade Commission cleared the purchase of the maker of Gatorade, despite concerns among agency staff that the deal would leave Purchase, N.Y.-based PepsiCo in a position to dominate the market for sports drinks.

FTC commissioners split 2-2 over the question of whether to oppose the deal, one vote short of the majority needed to file suit to block it. An agency spokeswoman said the commissioners then voted unanimously to end investigation of the transaction.
