Dipak Jain, the new dean of Northwestern University's Kellogg Graduate School of Management, sent an unprecedented plea to alumni last week: help us find short-term work for June graduates whose start dates have been postponed by employers. Many of the prestigious tech companies, investment banks and consulting firms that court Kellogg students have frozen hiring and deferred start times for the newly minted MBAs they recruited before the economy turned bleak.

They've left 50 of the 629 June graduates in limbo, forced to wait as long as nine months to begin their new jobs, without any salary.
