The format Crain's Chicago Business uses to forecast earnings of Chicago-area companies is produced in conjunction with Thomson Financial, a unit of Canada-based Thomson Corp. Using its database of analysts' estimates, Thomson Financial segments expectations for the coming quarter by industry groups and size of companies.
The results consist of a compilation of analysts' per-share earnings estimates that were available as of Aug. 1. Separately, Thomson Financial provides actual per-share earnings for the earlier quarter for companies that have reported by Aug. 1.
